Where to Stay in Himara: recommended areas and hotels (2026)

Himara is the quieter, more authentic side of the Albanian Riviera: a stone old town with its castle above the sea, the village beach below and several coves spread out to the north and south. Less crowded than Ksamil, it's ideal for combining beach, village and calm — the key is choosing the right area.

Getting to Himara

Himara is right on the Albanian Riviera, on the coastal road between Vlora and Saranda. It has no airport of its own; you get there by land from three points:

✈️Airport at Vlora — the closest (~1.5-2 h by car), though still without regular commercial flights in 2026.
✈️Airport at Tirana~4-5 h by car or bus.
🛥️From Corfu (Greece) — ferry to Saranda + ~1.5 h by bus.
🚌Bus from Saranda~1.5 h, several services a day (~300 lek).
🚗From Vlora over the Llogara Pass (1,027 m): one of the most spectacular stretches of the Riviera.
📍With your own car it's far more enjoyable: the beaches (Potami, Livadh, Gjipe, Jal) are spread out and public transport doesn't reach them all.

The 3 areas to stay in Himara

Old town and bay of Himara, the Spile area

1. Centre — Spile Best for most people

The heart of Himara: the town beach, the promenade with restaurants and bars, the supermarkets and, climbing the hill, the stone old town with the castle and its views over the Ionian. Staying here means having everything on foot and not depending on a car. It's the most practical, well-rounded option, especially if it's your first time.

Potami beach, Himara

2. Potami Beach Beach and resorts

A couple of kilometres south of the centre, Potami is the stretch of beach with the cleanest water, beach clubs and the more resort-style hotels — with a pool, a private beach and everything sorted without moving. Ideal for a pure beach holiday; to reach the village a car or a short taxi is best.

Livadh beach, Himara

3. Livadh and quiet beaches Calm and value

To the north, the long beach of Livadh and the coves at the far south offer the most relaxed pace: fewer people, places to stay ranging from luxury with a spa to very good value, and the sea just metres away. The best choice for switching off; a car makes it more enjoyable, though several hotels have everything on the beach itself.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Himara?
May to September. July and August bring the greatest heat (up to 35°C) and the highest prices; June and September are the sweet spot: sea at 23-25°C, beaches without the crowds and hotels 20-30% cheaper.
Which area should you stay in?
In the centre (Spile) to walk to the town beach, the old town and the restaurants; in Potami (to the south) for beach and resort-style hotels; in Livadh (to the north) for quiet beaches and better prices.
How do you get to Himara?
By bus from Saranda (approx. 1.5 h, several services) or from Vlora over the Llogara Pass. Having your own car is the easiest way to move between the beaches. Airports: Vlora (~2 h) or Tirana (4-5 h).
Himara or Ksamil?
Himara is quieter and more authentic, with an old town and several beaches spread out; Ksamil has the most iconic beaches but gets packed in summer. Many travellers combine both.
