Berat is the "city of a thousand windows": a UNESCO World Heritage Ottoman ensemble where hundreds of white stone-and-timber houses climb the hillside in tiers, crowned by a still-inhabited castle (Kala) and split in two by the river Osum. It's a cultural and architectural destination, not a beach one: little cobbled streets, terraces with views and good traditional food. You can see it in a day from Tirana, but it's worth staying one or two nights to enjoy it at sunrise and sunset, when the light bounces between the white façades.

Getting to Berat

Berat is about 2 hours south of Tirana, well connected by bus and car:

✈️Tirana (TIA) airport — the only international one nearby, ~120 km / ~2 h by car.
🚕Taxi / private transfer from TIA — between ~61 and 82 € (the official service is around 75 €).
🚌Bus from Tirana — from the South/North terminal, frequent departures, ~2 h to 2 h 45, ~4-7 €.
🚌From other cities — there are buses/minibuses from Durrës, Vlorë and Sarandë; they combine well with the coast.
🚗By car on the SH4, ~2 h; a simple, signposted route.
📍Berat's bus station is ~1,5 km from the old town (about 20 min on foot or 5 min by taxi).

1. Mangalem — the postcard quarter Best for most

The old Muslim quarter at the foot of the castle: the iconic image of stacked white houses with their thousand windows. Steep cobbled lanes, historic mosques and dozens of Ottoman houses turned into guesthouses and boutique hotels. It's the liveliest and most central, with the best views from the terraces of the upper floors.

2. Gorica — the other bank Quiet and with views

The historic Christian quarter, on the other side of the river Osum, linked to Mangalem by the beautiful seven-arch Ottoman stone bridge. Stone houses, old churches and a more residential, quiet feel. Its big advantage: from here you get the head-on view of Mangalem lit up, and it tends to be a little cheaper.

3. Castle — Kala Sleeping in the citadel

Albania's only inhabited fortress: within the medieval walls people still live and there are stone houses turned into guesthouses. Sleeping there is memorable, with 360° views of the river and the mountains. On the downside: cars can't go all the way up, the climb is steep (20-30 min on foot) and services are limited.

Is it worth staying overnight in Berat or is a day trip enough?
You can do it in a day (it's ~2 h from Tirana), but staying a night lets you see the castle and the white façades at sunrise and sunset without the crowds. Ideally, 1-2 nights.
When is the best time to visit Berat?
From late April to early October; spring and autumn have the best weather. The afternoon light is the best for photos.
Can you sleep inside the castle (Kala)?
Yes, the Kala is still inhabited and there are hotels and guesthouses within the walls (Berati Castle Hotel, Guest House Vasili). The grounds are open 24 h because people live there.
Mangalem or Gorica, which is better?
Mangalem to be in the middle of the action and the postcard view; Gorica for quiet, a better price and the head-on view of Mangalem from your terrace. They're a bridge apart.
Is it easy to get around the old town with a suitcase?
Not entirely: the streets are steep and cobbled, and cars don't go all the way up to the castle. Travel light and let your accommodation know in case they offer a transfer.
Is it a beach destination?
No, it's a historic inland city. For the beach you have to go to the coast (Vlora/Riviera).
